Healthcare providers, both traditional and alternative, increasingly recognize the important role of the social determinants of health. According to Healthy People 2020, these include but are not limited to social, contextual, and physical conditions of environments within which people live. These conditions are then affected by broader social, political, and economic forces. Addressing social determinants of health is crucial for improving health and addressing inequities in health and healthcare access. As a result, when considering treatment options, understanding the social context within which the targeted conditions, illnesses, and diseases exist is vital.
For instance, chronic pain is more prevalent among women, adults living in or near poverty, and among rural residents. Moreover, chronic pain is significantly higher among individuals on Medicaid or other public healthcare coverage.
